Probiotic fermented dairy's impact on memory-related brain chemicals, structure, and function in healthy women over 8 weeks

Updated

Abstract

Essence

An 8-week probiotic fermented dairy intervention showed preliminary effects on hippocampal-related measures in healthy women.

Evidence

This triple-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial assigned 40 healthy women aged 18-55 years to 130 g per day of probiotic yoghurt or placebo and measured hippocampal metabolites, imaging outcomes, microbiome changes, symptoms, memory, and blood markers.

Caveat

The main metabolite and brain-volume differences did not withstand correction for multiple comparisons, and most secondary measures showed no differences, making the signal preliminary in a small healthy-women sample.
