Probiotics and prebiotics may affect appetite in people with major depression compared to placebo

Updated

Abstract

Probiotic supplementation resulted in a significant increase in the desire to eat (P = 0.025) among patients with major depressive disorder.

  • No significant differences in body mass index or weight were observed among the probiotic, prebiotic, and placebo groups.
  • Energy intake and serum leptin levels were significantly increased in the probiotic group compared to the prebiotic group.
  • Prebiotic administration did not show a significant effect on appetite in patients with major depressive disorder.
