Links Between Teen Problematic Internet Use, Parents' Internet Habits, and Parent-Teen Communication

Abstract

Adolescent problematic internet use (PIU) prevalence was 69.9% among 4558 surveyed individuals.

  • Parent PIU prevalence was 61.4% in the surveyed sample.
  • 87% of parents with PIU had an adolescent with PIU, compared to 42% of parents without PIU.
  • Lenient parenting practices regarding internet content were linked to a higher likelihood of adolescent PIU.
  • Stricter parenting practices related to internet time were also associated with increased adolescent PIU.
  • Adolescents with PIU reported lower quality of communication with parents about internet use.
