Problematic Internet Use and Mental Health Disorders in Japanese Adult Psychiatric Patients

Updated

Abstract

Among 231 adult psychiatric patients, 25.1% were identified as problematic internet users.

  • Problematic internet users were significantly younger than normal internet users.
  • Higher scores on sleep problems, depression, and anxiety scales were observed in problematic internet users.
  • Problematic internet users reported increased symptoms of ADHD, autism, OCD, social anxiety disorder, and impulsivity.
  • The findings suggest that problematic internet use is prevalent among adult psychiatric patients.
  • Lower age and psychiatric comorbidity may be associated with problematic internet use in this population.
