Hawthorn compound Procyanidin C1 may reduce blood vessel aging in artery disease by affecting metabolism and inflammation

Updated

Abstract

Procyanidin C1 (PCC1) from hawthorn significantly reduces aortic root plaque in a mouse model of atherosclerosis.

  • PCC1 and hawthorn oligomeric proanthocyanidins (HOPCs) exhibit anti-atherosclerotic and anti-aging properties.
  • The treatment improved serum lipid metabolism and decreased markers of vascular senescence and inflammation.
  • PCC1 was found to inhibit key enzymes involved in pro-inflammatory mediator production.
  • Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) was identified as a direct target of PCC1, affecting downstream signaling pathways.
  • In vitro findings showed that PCC1 clears senescent cells and suppresses the inflammation-related secretory phenotype.
