Second booster dose may reduce long COVID risk after COVID-19 infection in southeastern Brazil

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Among previously infected participants in southeastern Brazil, a second COVID-19 booster was linked to lower odds of long COVID, especially during the Omicron period.

Evidence

This multicenter cross-sectional observational study of 2,033 mostly healthcare workers used multivariable logistic regression and found the strongest protection with two booster doses overall (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.07-0.46) and reduced risk with a second booster versus a complete primary series during Omicron (OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.34-0.74).

Caveat

Because this was a single-questionnaire cross-sectional study in a sample that was 86% healthcare workers, the results show association rather than causation and may be vulnerable to self-report and selection bias.
