Protein amount per meal, food sources, and traits in older adults with low versus high protein intake

Updated

Abstract

Low protein intake (<0.8 g/kg adjusted body weight/day) was present in 15% of Dutch community-dwelling older adults.

  • Median protein intake was significantly lower at all eating occasions for the low protein intake group compared to the high protein intake group.
  • The contribution of animal protein to total protein intake was less in the low protein intake group, while cereals contributed more.
  • Differences in protein intake and energy percentage from protein were most pronounced during lunch.
  • Low protein intake was associated with following a diet, being obese, and drinking alcohol less frequently.
