Psilocybin improves learned fear reduction and memory of this effect in mice with no stress, short-term stress, and long-term stress

Updated

Abstract

Psilocybin may enhance fear extinction and recall in both stressed and stress-naïve male mice.

  • Psilocybin transiently increased serum corticosterone in stress-naïve mice compared to saline.
  • This increase in corticosterone was not seen in mice that had experienced acute or chronic stress.
  • Psilocybin treatment improved fear extinction and recall in all groups, including those exposed to stress.
  • These results suggest that psilocybin could have therapeutic potential for various stress-related conditions.
  • Understanding these effects is important for translating findings to human mental health treatment.
