Psilocybin for psychological and existential distress in palliative care: Results from an open clinical trial

Abstract

Of the 13 participants who completed the intervention, 9 (69%) reported a meaningful global improvement in psychological distress.

  • Microdose psilocybin was administered in increasing doses over three weeks, starting at 1 mg and reaching 3 mg.
  • Participants were adults aged 40-84 with advanced, incurable illnesses, primarily cancer, and severe psychological distress.
  • No serious adverse events were reported, with nine mild or moderate adverse events noted.
  • Of the participants who completed the intervention, 62% experienced more than 50% improvement in depression scores.
  • A significant proportion (72%) also reported meaningful improvements in specific measures of demoralization.
