Trends in first-time use of psychedelics and other hallucinogens in the United States

Abstract

The prevalence of first-time hallucinogen use was 0.79% among 173,808 respondents from 2021 to 2023.

  • From 2002 to 2019, the average prevalence of first-time use of any hallucinogen was 0.71%.
  • MDMA, psilocybin, and LSD had average first-time use rates of 0.39%, 0.28%, and 0.18%, respectively, during the same period.
  • First-time hallucinogen use increased slightly over time, with an average odds ratio of 1.009 from 2002 to 2019.
  • Adolescents aged 12-17 showed a decrease in new hallucinogen use, while those aged 65 and older demonstrated an increase.
  • No significant change in first-time hallucinogen use was observed between 2021 and 2023.
