Review of Clinical Trials on Psychedelic Medicines for End-of-Life Care in 2022

Updated

Abstract

A total of 25 studies are identified as eligible for evaluating psychedelic treatments for psychological distress at end of life.

  • The studies include 13 randomized controlled trials and 12 open-label trials.
  • Investigational drugs comprise ketamine (11 trials), psilocybin (10 trials), 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (2 trials), and lysergic acid diethylamide (2 trials).
  • Three trials involve microdosing, while fifteen trials integrate psychotherapy.
  • There is a need for head-to-head comparisons of different psychedelics to determine their suitability for specific conditions.
  • More rigorous studies are required to improve control over expectancy and confirm therapeutic outcomes.
