Psychoactive effects of repeated ketamine infusions and their possible role in treating alcohol use disorder

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Repeated ketamine infusions caused strong acute psychoactive effects in alcohol use disorder, but those effects did not explain reduced drinking.

Evidence

A secondary analysis of a double-blind phase 2 randomized trial measured self-reported psychoactive effects across three ketamine or placebo infusions in 96 adults with moderate-to-severe alcohol use disorder.

Caveat

The mediation analysis was secondary and based on self-reported acute infusion experiences, so it cannot rule out mechanisms outside the measured psychoactive effects.
