Psychological support for parents of children and teens with long-term illnesses

Updated

Abstract

A total of 44 randomized controlled trials involving 4697 participants were analyzed regarding psychological therapies for parents of children with chronic illness.

  • Psychological therapies may improve parenting behavior in parents of children with cancer, chronic pain, diabetes, and traumatic brain injury.
  • A moderate-quality effect was observed for cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in improving parenting behavior post-treatment.
  • Parent mental health may improve with psychological therapies, particularly for those with children suffering from cancer and chronic pain.
  • Problem-solving therapy (PST) may enhance both parenting behavior and parent mental health.
  • Most studies did not report on adverse events, and safety evaluations were inconclusive.
