How social and psychological factors relate to developing and living with Internet gaming disorder during adolescence
Updated
Abstract
Overall, 357 out of 985 adolescents received a diagnosis of Internet gaming disorder (IGD) at either assessment point.
- Male gender, higher levels of hyperactivity/inattention, and self-esteem problems at the first assessment predicted IGD at the second assessment.
- IGD at the first assessment was associated with increased emotional distress in adolescents at the second assessment.
- Only a subgroup of adolescents consistently showed IGD over the one-year period, with 14.4% diagnosed at both points.
- The study suggests that hyperactivity/inattention and self-esteem issues may play a significant role in the development of IGD.
