Psychotherapy for Depression and Anxiety in Palliative Care: A Meta-Analysis

Updated

Abstract

Psychotherapy was associated with a large effect in reducing depression symptoms and a small effect in decreasing anxiety symptoms among 1,536 participants in palliative care.

  • 32 randomized controlled trials were included in the meta-analysis, covering various types of psychotherapy.
  • Psychotherapy also showed a small positive effect on improving quality of life for individuals in palliative care.
  • Intervention effects varied significantly based on the type of therapy, provider, number and length of treatment sessions, and the age of participants.
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy and other approaches like acceptance and mindfulness had significant positive effects.
  • More treatment sessions were linked to greater reductions in symptoms, while longer individual sessions correlated with smaller effects.
