Puerarin's effects on long-term alcohol-related brain damage by changing gut bacteria and inflammation signals

Updated

Abstract

Puerarin administration significantly ameliorated motor deficits, anxiety-like behaviors, and cognitive impairments in CAE mice.

  • Puerarin reduced hippocampal damage and decreased markers of neuroinflammation, such as Iba1 immunoreactivity.
  • The treatment downregulated protein expression levels of inflammatory markers IL-1β, IL-6, TLR4, Myd88, and NF-κB in the brain.
  • Puerarin restored intestinal barrier integrity by increasing the expression of Claudin-1 and Occludin.
  • Analysis of intestinal flora showed that puerarin increased beneficial bacteria and decreased pathogenic bacteria.
  • The findings suggest that puerarin could influence the 'microbiota-gut-brain axis' and related inflammatory pathways.
