pH-Responsive Nanoparticle Hydrogel for Treating Infected Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Updated

Abstract

Optimized solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) achieved a particle size of 141.24 ± 2.19 nm and an entrapment efficiency of 62.55 ± 1.07%.

  • The SLN-loaded hydrogel released ciprofloxacin in a pH-dependent manner, with greater release at pH 7.4 compared to pH 5.5.
  • Enhanced antibacterial activity was observed against E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa for the SLN-loaded hydrogel compared to the free drug gel.
  • The formulation demonstrated stability over three months at 4 °C with minimal changes in physicochemical properties.
  • The pH-responsive coating allowed for targeted drug release in alkaline environments typically found in diabetic foot ulcers.
