How much and how well do patients sleep in the surgical intensive care unit?

Updated

Abstract

Patients in a surgical ICU experienced an average of 8.28 hours of sleep, yet had 6.2 awakenings per hour.

  • Patients showed increased time spent in superficial sleep stages compared to healthy controls.
  • There was a notable decrease in the proportion of time spent in deeper sleep stages (3 and 4) and REM sleep.
  • Sleep quality in the surgical ICU was characterized as fragmented and markedly abnormal.
  • Findings suggest that while measurable sleep occurs, it may be inadequate for recovery.
