Fast CRISPR method to identify calf sex and improve cattle breeding

Updated

Abstract

The assay detected male bovine DNA down to 100 pg using both fluorescence and lateral flow assay readouts.

  • An efficient workflow for bovine embryo sexing was developed, combining whole genome amplification with a specific amplification method.
  • The workflow demonstrated consistent male-specific detection across five major beef breeds and Holstein cattle.
  • All sex calls from blastocyst biopsies matched results from an established real-time PCR method and SNP microarray genotyping.
  • Genome-wide SNP call rates from the biopsy products exceeded 85%, indicating effective genotyping capabilities.
