Fast improvement with serotonin reuptake inhibitors in depression after COVID

Updated

Abstract

92% of patients treated with SSRIs showed a clinical response to depression after recovering from COVID-19.

  • 40% of patients reported depression at one-, three-, and six-months follow-up after COVID-19.
  • A significant decrease in depression severity was observed, with baseline Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) scores averaging 23.37 and post-treatment scores averaging 6.71.
  • The treatment response was consistent across various clinical variables, including sex and psychiatric history.
  • This study is the first to investigate the efficacy of SSRIs specifically for post-COVID depression.
  • SSRIs may provide rapid antidepressant effects by targeting neuroinflammation related to SARS-CoV-2.
