Restoring function to a broken SlGLK2 gene in tomato using precise genome editing

Updated

Abstract

A 13-bp deletion in the SlGLK2 gene restored its function and improved fruit quality in tomatoes.

  • Restoring SlGLK2 function enhanced chlorophyll accumulation and plastid development in tomato fruits.
  • The edited CR-Slglk2-4 line displayed increased total soluble solids and tocopherol content in ripe fruit.
  • Reduced fruit nutritional quality was associated with the uniform ripening mutation that impaired plastid development.
  • Biochemical and transcriptomic analyses confirmed the restoration of SlGLK2's function in the edited line.
  • Genome editing may provide a method to recover traits lost during plant domestication and crop improvement.
