Rest and Activity Patterns, Their Influences, and Brain-Clinical Links in Opioid Use Disorder

Abstract

Among 42 patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), those receiving medications exhibited greater sleep-wake irregularity than those abstinent without medications or healthy controls.

  • Participants receiving opioid agonist medications for OUD showed a mean difference of 0.85 in sleep-wake irregularity compared to those without medications.
  • Greater sleep irregularity was correlated with a longer history of heroin use and lower exposure to daytime light among those on medication.
  • Individuals with OUD had lower brain activity in a default mode network state compared to healthy controls.
  • More pronounced sleep-wake irregularities were linked to exacerbated impairments in brain state dynamics.
