Resveratrol from grapes and its effects on uterine contractions and calcium movement in live and isolated rats

Updated

Abstract

Resveratrol inhibited uterine contractions induced by prostaglandin F (PGF)(₂α) in a concentration-dependent manner.

  • Resveratrol treatment reduced uterine contractions triggered by PGF(₂α), oxytocin, acetylcholine, and carbachol in rat models.
  • The compound also inhibited contractions caused by the Ca²(+) channel activator and depolarization from high potassium levels.
  • In human uterine smooth muscle cells, resveratrol decreased intracellular calcium levels stimulated by PGF(₂α).
  • Resveratrol acted similarly to calcium channel blockers by preventing calcium influx through voltage-operated channels.
  • In vivo studies demonstrated that resveratrol effectively suppressed PGF(₂α)-induced uterine contractions in rats.
