Resveratrol supplements may improve knee osteoarthritis by increasing a protective protein

Abstract

Resveratrol treatment significantly reduced pain intensity and improved several physical function measures in 122 knee osteoarthritis patients over 12 weeks.

  • Patients receiving 500 mg/day of resveratrol had lower pain intensity and WOMAC scores compared to those on placebo.
  • Resveratrol supplementation led to increased Oxford Knee Scores, range of motion, gait velocity, handgrip strength, and overall physical performance.
  • Higher plasma levels of SIRT1 and lower levels of 8-isoprostanes were observed in patients taking resveratrol.
  • Correlations were found between increased plasma SIRT1 and improvements in physical function measures, such as OKS and gait speed.
