Role of light-sensitive protein in the vision system of the night-active Pacific abalone

Abstract

An open reading frame of 1188 bp encoding 396 amino acids was identified for the Retinal-binding protein (RALBP) gene in the Pacific abalone.

  • The Pacific abalone is a nocturnal species that prefers darkness and exhibits movement and feeding at night.
  • Immunofluorescence assays indicated strong RALBP signals specifically in the pigment epithelial and photoreceptor cell layers of the retina.
  • Significant rhythmic expression of RALBP was observed under various light conditions, with higher levels during the day compared to the night.
  • The expression patterns suggest that the abalone's capacity to detect light variations may be linked to the diurnal regulation of RALBP.
