Using CRISPR tools that target both RNA and DNA to better reduce hepatitis B virus gene activity

Updated

Abstract

RNA-targeting CRISPR systems may provide a new approach to treating chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections.

  • Chronic HBV infection is a significant global health issue with no current curative treatment.
  • Synthetic guide RNA (gRNA)/Cas13d ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) were evaluated for their ability to target and degrade HBV RNA.
  • The study explored the potential antiviral effects of combining RNA-targeting RNPs with DNA-targeting RNPs.
  • Direct degradation of viral transcripts without causing genomic breaks is a key advantage of RNA-targeting CRISPR systems.
