Robotic-Assisted Compared to Navigation-Assisted Lower Back Spine Fusion Surgery: A National Database Study

Abstract

From 2015 to 2022, there were 2401 navigation-assisted and 651 robotic-assisted lumbar fusion cases.

  • No significant differences were found in 90-day adverse events between navigation-assisted and robotic-assisted lumbar fusions.
  • Robotic-assisted surgery was associated with a higher likelihood of readmissions (odds ratio: 1.77, P <0.001).
  • Three-year reoperation rates were similar for both techniques, with rates of 95.8% for navigation-assisted and 94.0% for robotic-assisted surgeries (P =0.30).
  • The increasing use of navigation and robotic systems raises questions about their incremental benefits.
