Regular teeth cleaning to maintain adult gum health

Updated

Abstract

Two studies with 1711 participants found that routine scaling and polishing has little to no effect on certain periodontal health outcomes over two to three years.

  • Routine scaling and polishing did not significantly impact gingivitis, probing depths, or oral health-related quality of life compared to no scheduled treatments.
  • A small reduction in calculus levels was observed with routine scaling and polishing compared to no treatment, though the clinical significance of this reduction is unclear.
  • Six-monthly scaling and polishing treatments resulted in a slightly greater reduction in calculus levels compared to 12-monthly treatments, with uncertain clinical importance.
  • Participants reported higher self-assessed levels of oral cleanliness with routine treatments, but the certainty of this evidence is low.
  • No studies evaluated the effects of scaling and polishing provided by dentists versus dental care professionals.
