Comparing Weight Loss and Safety of Two Types of Gastric Bypass Surgery with Different Bypass Lengths Over One Year

Updated

Abstract

One-year percent total weight loss was 33.8% after OAGB with a 160-cm biliopancreatic limb (BPL).

  • OAGB with a 200-cm BPL resulted in a one-year percent total weight loss of 35.3%.
  • RYGB achieved a one-year percent total weight loss of 30.9%.
  • Remission rates for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver were comparable across all groups.
  • Protein-calorie malnutrition occurred in 4.7% of patients after OAGB-200, with 7 requiring revisional surgery.
  • Only one patient (0.3%) experienced protein-calorie malnutrition after OAGB-160, responding to parenteral alimentation.
  • Mean operative time was longer for RYGB compared to both OAGB techniques.
