S-ketamine may link changes in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex to changes in plasma .

Evidence

This randomized placebo-controlled crossover study in 35 healthy male subjects used 7 Tesla proton MRS before and 24 hours after S-ketamine or placebo and found a significant treatment-by-glutamate interaction on BDNF change, with a trend-level positive glutamate-BDNF correlation only after ketamine.

Caveat

The result was only trend-level and came from healthy men rather than patients with depression, so it provides preliminary mechanistic evidence rather than clinical antidepressant proof.
