Abstract

The review discusses the tolerability and safety of newer serotonergic antidepressants compared to mirtazapine.

Improved tolerability and safety are often cited as reasons for the popularity of newer serotonergic antidepressants.
Various factors may contribute to the emergence of physical symptoms in patients, including both depression and treatment medications.
Rates of individual side effects associated with serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors, nefazodone, and venlafaxine are analyzed.
The adverse event experiences of these drugs are compared with those of mirtazapine.

The newer serotonergic antidepressants have become popular particularly because of improved tolerability and safety. The evidence supporting this belief is reviewed. The factors that contribute to the development of somatic symptoms are examined, including the depression itself and the drugs used for treatment. The rates for individual side effects with the serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors, nefazodone, and venlafaxine are presented and compared with the adverse event experience for mirtazapine.
