Recent COVID-19 infections and higher virus antibody levels are linked to stronger autoimmune antibody reactions

Updated

Abstract

SARS-CoV-2-induced latent autoimmunity may play a role in long-COVID symptoms.

  • Associations were explored between serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses to 18 self-antigens and antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2.
  • The study also examined antibody responses to common chronic infections such as Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, Helicobacter pylori, and Toxoplasma gondii.
  • Findings suggest that latent autoimmunity could be involved in the symptoms experienced by some long-COVID patients.
