Dominance of the Gamma variant causing the recent COVID-19 wave in southern Brazil and discovery of a new spike protein mutation (D614A)

Updated

Abstract

In the first quarter of 2021, 67% of SARS-CoV-2 samples in Southern Brazil were identified as the Gamma lineage.

  • A total of 70 SARS-CoV-2 positive samples were sequenced from January 28 to April 23, 2021.
  • The P.2 lineage accounted for 27% (19/70) of the samples, while the B.1.1.28 lineage represented 6% (4/70).
  • Two samples from the Gamma lineage exhibited a new mutation, S:D614A.
  • The emergence of new mutations may be linked to the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the region.
  • Understanding the immune response and monitoring variants is crucial for managing the COVID-19 health crisis.
