Lingering SARS-CoV-2 and Gut Bacteria Changes Linked to Long COVID

Updated

Abstract

Essence

This review argues that persistent SARS-CoV-2 in the gut may help drive long COVID and related gastrointestinal disease through chronic inflammation and microbiota disruption.

Evidence

Narrative review evidence links gastrointestinal viral persistence, gut dysbiosis, and enteric disorders including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis.

Caveat

Because this is a review rather than a new controlled study, it synthesizes emerging associations and cannot establish that gut viral persistence causes these disorders.
