How School Schedules Relate to Sleep, Daytime Sleepiness, and Attention in Teens from Urban and Rural Areas

Abstract

A total of 159 Brazilian adolescents reported significant differences in sleep patterns based on school shift and urbanization levels.

  • Morning-shift students woke up earlier and had shorter total sleep time compared to those in the afternoon shift.
  • Students in the morning shift experienced higher sleep debt, irregular wake-up times, and increased daytime sleepiness.
  • Higher urbanization levels were associated with later bed and wake-up times on weekdays, but shorter sleep duration on weekends.
  • Despite differences in sleep patterns, there were no significant variations in attention performance based on school shift.
  • The findings suggest that early school start times can significantly impact adolescents' sleep-wake cycles, independent of urbanization.
