Flexible fences were the most successful method for excluding sea urchins from kelp.

  • Sea urchins can significantly damage kelp forests, leading to less productive ecosystems.
  • Three methods for excluding sea urchins were tested: flexible fences, electricity, and copper anti-fouling paint.
  • Laboratory results indicated that flexible fencing was the most effective exclusion method.
  • In the field, flexible fences of both 30 cm and 60 cm heights maintained low sea urchin densities in barren areas.
  • Flexible fencing was not effective in preventing sea urchins from entering intact kelp beds.
  • The cost of implementing flexible fencing may limit its widespread use for kelp restoration.
