How Seasonal Depression and Alcohol Use Are Linked to Sleep and Snoring in Finland

Abstract

Subjects with comorbid seasonal affective disorder and alcohol use disorder reported the highest levels of subjective sleeping problems.

  • Individuals with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) displayed distinct sleep issues compared to those with SAD or AUD alone.
  • A total of 298 participants met the criteria for SAD, 359 for AUD, and 69 for both SAD and AUD.
  • Subjects with SAD+AUD experienced more severe sleeping problems than individuals in control groups, as well as those with only SAD or AUD.
  • The study highlights the importance of considering comorbid conditions when assessing sleep functioning in patients with SAD and AUD.
