Selenium's role in preventing cancer

Abstract

In a review of 83 studies involving 27,232 participants, there is high certainty evidence that selenium supplements do not reduce cancer risk.

  • Randomized controlled trials showed no significant reduction in overall cancer incidence (risk ratio 0.99) or mortality (risk ratio 0.81) with selenium supplementation.
  • Limited evidence indicated no effect of selenium on specific cancer types, including colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers, with high certainty for most sites.
  • Observational studies suggested that higher selenium exposure is associated with lower cancer incidence (odds ratio 0.72) and mortality (odds ratio 0.76), but these studies have major design weaknesses.
  • No dose-response relationship was confirmed between selenium status and cancer risk, and certainty of evidence for observational findings was very low.
  • Concerns were raised about increased risks of high-grade prostate cancer and type 2 diabetes among those taking selenium supplements.
