Semaglutide lowers alcohol drinking and relapse behavior in male and female rats

Abstract

Semaglutide administration reduced alcohol intake and relapse-like drinking in both male and female rats.

  • Fluorescently marked semaglutide was found in the nucleus accumbens of alcohol-drinking rats.
  • Semaglutide decreased alcohol-induced hyperactivity and dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens of male mice.
  • The presence of alcohol increased dopamine metabolites DOPAC and HVA in the nucleus accumbens when semaglutide was administered.
  • Semaglutide increased the gene expression of enzymes involved in dopamine metabolism in male mice.
  • The treatment was associated with decreased body weight in alcohol-drinking rats of both sexes.
