Semaglutide and its impact on weight gain and metabolism in patients taking antipsychotic medications

Updated

Abstract

A mean weight loss of 12.25 ± 1.32 kg was observed in individuals with severe mental illness after 12 months of semaglutide treatment.

  • The study involved 47 individuals with severe mental illness, with a majority (66%) having type 2 diabetes at baseline.
  • Significant weight loss was reported at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, with the highest mean weight loss occurring at 12 months.
  • Individuals without type 2 diabetes experienced greater weight loss compared to those with the condition.
  • Improvements in body mass index and HbA1c levels were noted, indicating enhanced metabolic health.
  • The most common side effects were gastrointestinal, but these did not lead to discontinuation of semaglutide.
