Semaglutide's effects on body fat and kidney function in the SMART trial

Updated

Abstract

Treatment with semaglutide for 24 weeks resulted in a 9.1 kg reduction in total body weight in adults with CKD and overweight or obesity.

  • Semaglutide treatment reduced lean body mass by 2.5 kg and fat mass by 3.9 kg.
  • Changes in lean body mass and fat mass were not associated with changes in kidney function as measured by creatinine or cystatin C estimates.
  • The treatment also decreased extracellular water by 0.9 L and systolic blood pressure by 6.3 mm Hg.
  • Systolic blood pressure changes correlated with changes in extracellular water.
