Semaglutide improves heart disease risk markers in people with HIV

Updated

Abstract

Semaglutide therapy in 36 participants led to significant reductions in cardiovascular disease risk markers.

  • Lipidomic analysis revealed a decrease in triglycerides, diglycerides, and sphingomyelins, along with an increase in certain bile acids and phosphatidylcholines.
  • CVD-linked lipoprotein species decreased, while LDL particle size increased and large HDL particle number decreased.
  • Baseline levels of the inflammatory markers GlycA and GlycB were elevated in most participants, with 56% of those with elevated GlycA improving and 32% normalizing.
  • 41% of participants with elevated GlycB showed improvement, and 42% normalized.
  • Changes in lipo-/glyco-protein concentrations did not correlate with baseline weight, liver fat, or insulin resistance.
