Semaglutide changes the gut microbiome beyond reducing appetite with different gut-brain effects in males and females

Updated

Abstract

Semaglutide treatment caused significant weight loss and altered gut microbial composition in diet-induced obese rats.

  • SEMA significantly reduced body weight gain and food intake in both male and female rats.
  • Changes in microbial richness and evenness were observed following SEMA treatment.
  • SEMA-treated rats showed increased levels of Firmicutes, particularly Clostridiaceae, compared to controls, who had more Bacteroidota.
  • Sex-specific relationships between gut microbial composition and host metabolic parameters were noted.
  • The alterations in gut microbiota were influenced by mechanisms beyond reduced food intake.
