How shift work-like schedules affect gut bacteria and gut lining differently in males and females and their link to stroke survival

Abstract

Male rats exposed to shifted light cycles exhibited significant alterations in gut microbiome composition and morphology after 50 days.

  • Circadian dysregulation in male rats led to reduced alpha diversity and shifts in beta diversity of the gut microbiome.
  • Changes in gut bacteria composition correlated with stroke survival in male rats but not in females.
  • Pathologic changes in gut morphology included shorter, blunted villi and disrupted gut barrier integrity in males exposed to shifted light cycles.
  • Decreased levels of the neuroprotective short-chain fatty acid butyrate and increased serum endotoxin and proinflammatory cytokine IL-17A were observed in shifted LD male rats.
  • These findings indicate that gut health may play a role in the observed sex differences related to circadian rhythm disturbances and ischemic stroke outcomes.
