Sex-related differences in stomach microbes and metabolites linked to lamb body weight

Abstract

At six months, male lambs showed significantly greater body weight compared to female lambs.

  • Male lambs had higher serum indices, including growth hormone and various metabolites, compared to females.
  • Significant differences in rumen microbial community composition were observed between male and female lambs.
  • The relative abundance of certain bacteria, such as Succiniclasticum, increased in male lambs, while Prevotella decreased.
  • Up-regulated metabolites in male lambs were primarily linked to amino acid pathways and positively correlated with body weight.
  • In contrast, metabolites up-regulated in female lambs were associated with lipid metabolism and negatively correlated with body weight.
  • Specific microbial and metabolic markers showed significant correlations with body weight, with some markers positively and others negatively associated.
