How sex affects the impact of nitrate supplements on muscle power and endurance

Updated

Abstract

Inorganic nitrate supplementation did not significantly affect knee extensor maximal power, maximal contraction velocity, or muscular endurance in young males and females.

  • Plasma nitrate and nitrite levels were elevated after beetroot juice supplementation.
  • Peak power showed a difference between sexes at all angular velocities, indicating a sex effect.
  • No significant differences in maximal knee extension power or velocity were observed between treatment groups.
  • Muscular endurance, measured as time-to-task failure, did not significantly differ between beetroot juice and placebo.
  • Moderate to large effect sizes for peak power were noted at specific speeds, suggesting a possible differentiated response to dietary nitrate based on sex.
