Updated

Abstract

Of 63,561 Veterans with type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease, only 42% received evidence-based prescriptions for SGLT2 inhibitors in 2023.

  • Trial-concordant prescriptions of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists increased over time for both Black and White patients.
  • SGLT2 inhibitor prescriptions reached 42% and GLP-1 receptor agonist prescriptions reached 15% among eligible patients in 2023.
  • Black Veterans were less likely to receive an evidence-based GLP-1 receptor agonist prescription compared to White Veterans, with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.85.
  • No significant difference was found in evidence-based SGLT2 inhibitor prescriptions between Black and White patients, with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.96.
  • Racial disparities in prescription rates exist, even in a healthcare system with minimal economic barriers.
