Use of Three Diabetes Medicines and New Low Sodium Levels in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Updated

Abstract

Among more than 300,000 matched pairs, SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists were associated with a 15% lower hazard of hyponatremia compared to DPP-4 inhibitors.

  • SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists showed a hazard ratio of 0.850 and 0.847 for hyponatremia respectively when compared to DPP-4 inhibitors.
  • The reduced risk of hyponatremia persisted even at stricter sodium thresholds.
  • Lower risks were observed across patients with heart failure, chronic kidney disease, or using high-risk medications.
  • SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists were found to be broadly comparable regarding the risk of hyponatremia.
