Exosomes from dental stem cells may reduce age-related bone loss by boosting cell cleanup in aging bone stem cells

Updated

Abstract

SHED-Exo effectively ameliorated bone loss in aged osteoporotic mice without causing organ toxicity.

  • SHED-Exo are enriched in proteins associated with bone formation and the process of cleaning up damaged mitochondria.
  • Treatment with SHED-Exo restored mitochondrial function and promoted the development of bone-forming cells in aging bone marrow stem cells.
  • Activation of the cellular cleanup process, known as mitophagy, is linked to the therapeutic effects observed in senescent bone marrow stem cells.
  • The findings suggest that SHED-Exo may serve as a promising therapeutic approach for age-related osteoporosis.
