Effects of Semaglutide and Tirzepatide on Bone Health in Patients at Higher Fracture Risk

Updated

Abstract

Patients using semaglutide or tirzepatide experienced a median 5% weight loss after 17 months.

  • Both groups showed significant declines in bone mineral density (BMD) at the total hip and femoral neck.
  • Weight loss was directly associated with bone loss at the total hip and femoral neck in the GLP-1 receptor agonist group.
  • Among patients without diabetes, the GLP-1 RA group had greater total hip bone loss compared to controls.
  • Total hip bone loss was similar between GLP-1 RA users and controls in patients with diabetes.
  • The findings suggest that the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists on bone may vary depending on diabetes status.
